Scratching that itch

How Can I Manage My Scaly Scalp
| Category: Psoriasis

Did you know that the scalp is the most common area to get psoriasis? In fact, around 1 out of 2 people with psoriasis will have scalp involvement, but not always correctly diagnosed.

Of course, that’s only the start of the problem. Treating the scalp, particularly if you have hair, can be very tricky. Even with such a common condition, with around 1.3 million people having some form of psoriasis in the UK, many people still don’t fully understand it, or how to manage their scalp and hair. The scale and scabby nature of this irritating skin condition can not only be embarrassing, but, have a huge psychological impact.

The scale build-up and thick plaques on the scalp, often make the most commonly prescribed psoriasis ointments almost impossible to use, as the hair gets in the way. Other treatments such as liquids tend  to ‘run’ and spray foams are difficult to target.

So, what is the answer? Unfortunately, there is no simple answer, but, with care and persistence, there are ways to develop a regime that might work for you, although you will still need a regular maintenance programme to keep the scalp in an acceptable state.
